The Kids Growing initiative supports 14 primary school gardens across the Waitaki District at:
Fenwick, Pembroke, St. Joseph’s, Kakanui, Totara, Duntroon, Waitaki Valley, Hampden, Maheno, Glenavy, Papakaio, Oamaru North, and Weston Primary Schools, as well as Little Wonders kindergarten.
The aim of Kids Growing is for every primary school in North Otago to establish an edible garden as an outdoor classroom, encourage healthy eating behaviours such as 5+ fruits and veggies per day, involve parents and grandparents to share gardening skills, and inspire children to apply these gardening and cooking skills at home. The Waitaki Community Gardens acts as a grandparent garden to the school gardens–offering educational resources & activities, access to funding opportunities for tools & resources for projects, and support staff.
